With Missouri becoming the 28th state to pass "Right to Work" legislation, the threat level of a National Right to Work Law is growing. New Hampshire will be holding a full house vote to hopefully vote down "Right to Work" legislation on Thursday.
So what does "Right to Work" mean?
"Right to Work" laws allow employees to not join a union but benefit from the collective bargaining agreement. Under our current MA laws, employees who opt-out of a union, are still mandated to pay an agency fee each month. "Right to Work" laws would allow these members that have opted-out to continue to benefit from our collective bargaining agreement but not pay a dime in union dues.
Do "Right to Work" states still have unions?
States that have "Right to Work" laws do still have unions, but most states have a lower percentage of union membership since the "Right to Work" laws were passed.
How does "Right to Work" effect labor?
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2016 median annual household income in the United States was $56,516. 21 out of 28 "Right to Work" states median annual household income fell below the United States average.
What you can do to fight "Right to Work"?
Staying engaged and involved in local and statewide politics is the best way to fight against the national push for "Right to Work".
