| Scott Brown: Distorting the Truth with his Myth Vs. Fact |
|
|
Brothers & Sisters:
By this time most of you have seen the Myth vs. Fact propaganda that has been circulating through email and social media.
Senator Scott Brown states that the PFFM is distorting his record for “political reasons”.
Let me make something perfectly clear - we have not distorted his record, the facts are what they are.
Scott Brown NEVER denies any of our statements because he can’t - they are ALL true.
Instead, he attempts some misdirection - by pointing out some other votes to avoid having to explain his actions.
Make no mistake, the only person here “playing politics” is the politician!

The Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts
The Romney We Know....
During his tenure as Governor, Mitt Romney took every opportunity to take from the professional fire fighters of Massachusetts. He victimized fire fighters, public sector employees, and organized labor throughout the state to forward his agenda. The members of the PFFM had the misfortune of suffering the cuts he imposed and were forced to battle to preserve all that we had fought for throughout the years. As he campaigns again for President, we are reminded of the vicious political attacks of his previous administration and have a unique look forward to the nationwide effects Romney could have on fire fighters throughout the country, and organized labor as a whole. It is our responsibility to look back at Romney’s actions as our Governor, draw our attention to the message he is spreading as he campaigns across this country, and stand up as fire fighters, union members, and citizens, in opposition of his efforts.
This is the Romney we know:

| Collective Bargaining |
|
|
As Legislators return to session to begin work on their 2012 agendas, we should be reminded that all around this country our rights will again be attacked. As close as New Hampshire, fire fighters' collective bargaining rights are once again facing an aggressive assault by their State Legislature. Below is a reminder of the attacks that we, the PFFM, have endured just last year and our brothers and sisters in New Hampshire are battling again today. This is an article written by one of our members and published in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette on May 5, 2011. Collective Bargaining is one of our most important rights and must be protected.

| The Scott Brown Trickle Down |
|
|
When people choose Scott Brown, they choose Orin Hatch, Mike Enzi, and Mitch McConnell. They choose millionaires and subsidies for huge corporations. They choose the elimination of rights for working families, the destruction of our retirement security, and the slashing of the funds that allow our municipalities to stay afloat.
This is what comes with a vote for Scott Brown:
Orrin Hatch will become the Chair of the Finance Committee. He is committed to eliminating defined benefit pension plans.
Mike Enzi will become the Chair of the health, Education, and Labor Committee. He will continue his fight against collective bargaining and push federal Right to Work legislation.
Mitch McConnell will become the Senate Majority Leader. He will continue to support Cut, Cap, and Balance. Legislation that will decimate our cities’ and towns’ last remaining lifeline to weather these difficult economic times.
The Republican Party will appoint 2 Supreme Court Justices. After fire fighters fight for all that we have earned over the past century, the Republican Party will take away our last protection of a fair and balanced court to watch over the interests of middle class working Americans.

| Letter received from Senator John Kerry |
|
|
Last fall the PFFM sent numerous letters to Senator John Kerry regarding his role on the Congressional Super Committee. As solutions were being developed to solve the financial crisis occurring within our government, these letters addressed the protection of fire fighters both in Massachusetts and throughout the country. These letters detailed the importance of maintaining our jobs, our benefits, and the fundamental role fire fighters play in our communities. The following is the responses of Senator John Kerry:

| Letter to the PFFM Membership |
|
|
Brothers and Sisters,
After the PFFM awarded our endorsement for U.S. Senate to Elizabeth Warren, the Brown campaign released a letter telling our members we have distorted Scott Brown's voting record. Those claims are untrue and unfounded.
IAFF Assistant to the General President for Governmental Affairs Kevin O'Connor and PFFM COPE Director Michael Papagni have prepared our responses to these allegations. These responses were written independently and reflect the opinion of both our International and State Organizations.

| Mitt Romney: We don’t need more cops, firefighters or teachers |
|
|
Romney made the comments in response to Obama’s presser today, at which the president claimed the “private sector is doing fine.” Per CNN:
Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

| Successful Lobbying |
|
|
As our Congressmen, state legislators, and local politicians continue to do the work of running our government, it is of utmost importance that the views and priorities of the fire fighters are understood at every level. It is incumbent upon the leadership of our Locals to ensure that all of our politicians are knowledgeable when acting on any legislation that impacts fire fighters. The following are Tips for Successful Lobbying, as suggested by the IAFF:

PROFESSIONAL FIRE FIGHTERS OF MASSACHUSETTS ENDORSE ELIZABETH WARREN FOR UNITED STATES SENATE
Boston - September 26, 2012 - Massachusetts firefighters from across the state converged in South Boston today to endorse Elizabeth Warren for US Senate.
"Firefighters are on the front lines everyday fighting for the safety of our residents, and it's time we elect a fighter that will stand up for us," said Edward Kelly, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts. "Elizabeth Warren is that person and the 12,000 Massachusetts firefighters and our families are proud to endorse her for US Senate."
"Elizabeth Warren could very well be the vote needed to protect the crucial federal programs that ensure the safety of the public and the safety of firefighters in communities across Massachusetts and the nation, and that's why firefighters support her candidacy for Senate," said Harold Schaitberger, General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
"I'm honored to receive the endorsement of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts," said Warren. "Across the Commonwealth, our firefighters work tirelessly and courageously to keep our cities and towns safe. As a Senator, I will be committed to ensuring that our firefighters have the tools, the staffing, and the resources they need to protect our communities. I am proud to stand with the PFFM, and I will fight for a level playing field for firefighters and all hardworking men and women across Massachusetts."
"Scott Brown's 'everyday guy' act looks good on paper, but his votes tell the true story," continued Kelly. "He voted against putting firefighters, police and teachers back to work and to abolish the SAFER and FIRE Acts within five years, programs crucial to keep us and those we protect safe. This shows just how out of touch he is with the middle class."
The Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts represent more than 12,000 professional firefighters from across the Commonwealth. More information about the PFFM can be found at www.pffm.org.
